Principal's Newsletter
Spring 2022
Dear Parents and Families,
Let’s start today by asking - did you know that Decatur is blue, white, and …. Green? That’s right! We are proud to announce that we have recently been named a Maryland Green School by the Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education. We are looking forward to continuing all of our green initiatives while helping other schools get on the path toward this distinction as well.
Meanwhile, Stephen Decatur High School continues to “spring” into action with celebrations and special events, extracurricular activities and sports, and testing. Looking back on April, SDHS hosted a very successful Prom with over 500 students in attendance and we are super thankful to our After Prom Parent Committee and community businesses for their donations to our students for our After Prom event.
As usual, our students have remained active in the community. Numerous Decatur club volunteers were out and about for many events including the Ocean Pines Spring Celebration, the MS Walk in Ocean City, the Surf Club beach clean-up, and the Town of Berlin Earth Day park celebration. Our annual Job Fair was again a success with hundreds of students applying and obtaining employment in Worcester County. Congratulations are in order to our Peggy Hevel Writing Contest winners, our D.A.R. Good Citizen – Danielle Consigli, our “STAR” recipients, and our hundreds of WeXL honorees. In the testing world, we just concluded administering approximately 250 Advanced Placement examinations in 19 different areas to over 200 students. Now, we are in the midst of MCAP and HSA assessments for nearly 400 students. Finally, in the sports world, we recently celebrated 24 student athletes who signed on to bring their games to the collegiate level and we are excited to see what our sports teams will be able to accomplish in the post season.
Looking ahead, we have several senior celebrations including Senior Awards Night, Baccalaureate, our third annual Boardwalk Processional, and of course our Commencement Ceremony held at the Louis H. Taylor stadium.
Communication is essential and we strive to connect to our students, parents and families, and community each and every day. We will continue reaching out to you with weekly robo-calls and text messages. We also encourage you to visit our website and follow our social pages including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and TikTok for announcements, information, and celebrations.
As always, we wish to express our sincere gratitude toward our entire school community. We would not be the amazing school that we are without the help and support of all of you. Thank you and may you have a safe, healthy, and happy spring season!
Sincerely,
Thomas Sites, Principal
